Hokorian citizenship can be obtained in several ways under the law. Some people become citizens automatically, while others must apply and be approved.
Main ways to become a citizen
You may become a Hokorian citizen through:
- birth or descent
- restoration of citizenship
- application and approval by the Government
Each route has different requirements and processes.
Citizenship by birth or descent
You may be recognised as a Hokorian citizen automatically if you meet the conditions set out in law.
This can apply where:
- you are born to a Hokorian citizen, or
- you otherwise qualify through descent
In these cases, citizenship exists by operation of law. This means you are a citizen without needing to apply, although you may need to be registered to confirm your status.
Citizenship by restoration
Citizenship can be restored if it was previously lost in certain situations.
For more information, see ‘Restoring your Hokorian citizenship’.
Citizenship by application
If you are not already a citizen, you can apply to become one.
To be recognised as a citizen, you must:
- meet the eligibility requirements set by the Government
- submit an application in the required form
- provide accurate and complete information
- declare any other citizenships you hold
The Government will assess your application based on the law.
Restrictions on becoming a citizen
An application or recognition may be refused or delayed where:
- false or misleading information is provided
- fraud is involved
- the person poses a serious risk to the State, such as involvement in violence, attempts to undermine the constitutional order or serious criminal conduct
- the person is affected by restrictions relating to certain states or entities
All decisions must be lawful, reasonable and recorded.
How to apply
To apply for Hokorian citizenship:
- complete the application process set by the Government
- provide all required information and documents
- respond to any further requests for information
The Government will review your application and decide whether to grant citizenship.
When citizenship takes effect
Citizenship only takes effect once it is formally recognised.
Depending on the route:
- automatic citizenship must be confirmed and recorded
- restored citizenship takes effect once approved
- granted citizenship takes effect after a successful application
In all cases:
- you are entered into the Register of Citizens
- you are recognised as a Hokorian citizen from the date of confirmation
Additional information
- The Register of Citizens records all recognised citizens
- All decisions on citizenship must be lawful, reasonable and recorded
