A marriage that took place outside Hokoria can be recognised if it meets certain legal conditions and is recorded in the official register.

When a foreign marriage is recognised

A foreign marriage will be recognised if all of the following apply:

  • it was valid under the law of the place where it was conducted
  • both parties met the minimum age requirement
  • the marriage is monogamous, meaning neither person has another spouse
  • the parties are not within prohibited family relationships

Recognition is subject to verification by a Registrar.

Registration requirement

A foreign marriage must be entered into the Register of marriages to have legal effect in Hokoria.

Without registration, the marriage is not legally recognised within Hokoria.

How to register a foreign marriage

To register a foreign marriage:

  1. submit details of the marriage to a Registrar
  2. provide evidence that the marriage was valid where it took place
  3. provide identification and any other required information

The Registrar will verify the information before recording the marriage.

What happens after registration

Once registered:

  • the marriage is recognised under Hokorian law
  • it has full legal effect within the State
