Using AI: Government organisations

Using AI-generated content

AI-generated content is becoming more common across industries and across the internet.

AI-generated content, including text-based and image-based, should be used with caution and consideration. We advise against using AI when conducting Government business, as there are significant ethical concerns.

AI-generated content should not be used in any work that will be officially published, especially in any legal documents and responses to public queries. All published content must be human-written or made.

Where content is officially published without knowing it was AI-generated, it may be republished without the AI-generated content or should be amended to disclose that AI was used.

Organisational policies on AI

This policy does not restrict using AI in any documents and resources that will not be officially published. This means that AI could be used in internal documents and resources.

We encourage organisations to set their own policies on AI, including whether AI can be used:

  • To support an individual’s work and understanding when working,
  • In any internal documents or resources,
  • To generate images.

We also encourage organisations to set their own policies on what to do if an individual is discovered to have used AI in their work.
